No one will achieve the green transition in a socio-economically sensible way without overall government planning, said Concito chairwoman Connie Hedegaard.

Connie Hedegaard: The state must get involved

CLIMATE SUMMIT: It is a gigantic challenge to distribute the areas between traffic, agriculture and energy plants, and that is the state's task, said the Concito chairman.

SØNDERBORG: The state must be much more involved when the big lines are to be drawn in the distribution of land in a new climate reality. This was central when former climate minister and EU climate commissioner Connie Hedegaard welcomed an oversubscribed climate and environment conference in Sønderborg.

According to her, the arrow points to the municipal politicians at the decentralized level when words, goals and promises must be fulfilled. And in the vast majority of municipalities, climate policy is decided by consensus, but that is simply not enough.

The current chairman of the think tank Concito stated that no one will achieve the green transition in a socio-economically sensible way without overall state planning.

And here, according to her, distributing land between traffic, agriculture and energy plants is a gigantic challenge. And this is precisely where the state should shoulder its responsibility to a greater extent.

Nothing heard

This point was supplemented by Vejen Mayor Frank Schmidt Hansen (K), who is chairman of the Municipal Climate Action Committee. He received applause from the audience when he gave an example of the state holding back when it comes to getting the big shots:

- Look at how things are going with the designation of the large energy parks on land. We were supposed to submit proposals and requests in October, but we haven't heard anything. We have our running shoes on, but we need a decision from the state about those designations.

Connie Hedegaard also believed that in the future it will be necessary to have more so-called place-based planning: That the expectations for urban and rural municipalities should not be the same, because they have different challenges:

- Who in particular should shoulder what? Here too, the state can help by giving a boost to those of you who stand face to face with the citizens, she said.
