Climate negotiations at COP30 will continue on Friday morning local time after a fire in a tent interrupted this year's climate summit in the Brazilian city of Belém. This was reported by unnamed Brazilian officials, according to the AFP news agency at around 01:30.
- Brazilian authorities have restored operational conditions at the conference site, it is said.
It is not clear what caused the fire. However, it was probably electrical equipment of some kind - and probably a microwave oven. This has been reported by the local fire department, according to Reuters.
The conference venue, where negotiations between ministers from all over the world are taking place, was evacuated around lunchtime.
Earlier Thursday evening, Ritzau's dispatched journalist Rasmus Svaneborg reported that a fire had broken out at the venue.
- Thousands of participants are being guided out of the COP30's large tent now, and fire engines can be heard, it was said.
Earlier in the evening, the organizers, the UN Climate Convention (UNFCCC), said that the area would be closed until at least 8 p.m. Brazilian time, which is midnight in Denmark.
The organizers reported that the fire was brought under control in six minutes. 13 people received treatment on site after inhaling smoke. The UNFCCC has written in a message to participants at COP30 that limited damage has been caused.
Videos and pictures on social media show firefighters trying to put out high flames.
There is a day left before the summit, and two demands in particular are potentially in conflict with each other.
While the world's poor countries are demanding a new target for financing climate adaptation, the developed countries, led by the EU, will only send more money to the south if they are promised a clear path towards more CO2 reductions.
Every year, the almost 200 countries that have joined the UN Climate Convention meet for a large meeting - a "conference of the parties", also called COP. There have been many of them. This meeting is number 30 and is therefore called COP30. It will be held in Belém, Brazil, from November 10 to 21.
The goal of the meeting is to accelerate the implementation of climate measures in order to meet the Paris Agreement's goal of limiting temperature increases to 1.5 degrees.
