17 areas in play as first state-designated energy parks

The government's goal of quadrupling green energy production on land must be achieved, among other things, through a state designation of areas for energy parks.

A broad majority in the Danish Parliament supported the "Climate Agreement on More Green Energy from Solar and Wind on Land 2023" in December, which includes an ambition that Denmark will quadruple its electricity production from solar and wind on land by 2030.

So far, a total of 271 areas have been screened in two rounds as possible destinations for these energy parks. The Danish Planning and Rural Development Agency has currently received positive feedback from the municipalities on the areas for a total of 17 areas. The agency states this in a statement.

It is the Minister for Urban and Rural Areas, Morten Dahlin (V), who, with the support of the municipal council, ultimately designates areas for energy parks after prior briefing of the agreement group behind the "Climate Agreement on More Green Energy from Solar and Wind on Land 2023". The designation of energy parks will take the form of executive orders that determine the area designated as an energy park.

- We are now ready to move forward with designating the first 17 areas for energy parks based on a close dialogue with municipalities and renewable energy developers. This is an important step in enabling a quadrupling of green electricity from solar and wind on land. And it is an important step in ensuring a Denmark that is free from Russian gas. At the same time, the energy parks provide new business and development opportunities in rural areas, which can contribute to more jobs and more growth locally, says Morten Dahlin in a statement.

First designations will take place at the end of 2024

The designation of energy parks on land provides the opportunity to establish both renewable energy plants, PtX plants and associated commercial buildings such as production companies. The 17 energy parks have a maximum theoretical energy production potential of 9.2 TWh.

The energy parks will be designated under a new law on state-designated energy parks, which will enter into force on July 1. The law provides favorable conditions for the establishment of energy parks on land with wind turbines and solar panels, as well as associated facilities in the form of PtX plants and other commercial buildings.

Work is underway to designate the first energy parks by the end of 2024. Registration of new potential areas for energy parks will also be opened at the end of 2024 and again in 2025.

These areas are in the running to be designated as the first state energy parks:

  • The Uur Hedebrug area in Ikast-Brande Municipality
  • The Ulkær Mose area in Ikast-Brande Municipality
  • The Farris area in Kolding Municipality
