In August last year, two ministers and a mayor cut the ribbon on what was called the world's first dynamic 'power-to-ammonia' plant in Ramme near Lemvig. The plant, established by Skovgaard Energy in collaboration with Topsoe and Vestas, was to convert green electricity from the sun and wind into ammonia as a replacement for fossil fuels for ships and aircraft. But ten months later, not a drop of ammonia has yet been produced. The plant in Ramme is not the only PtX project to experience start-up problems. Similar plants in several places in the country have been delayed or scaled down. According to Michael Madsen, head of department for PtX at Green Power Denmark, green hydrogen and green fuels are a new market in its infancy, which makes it challenging to get all the elements to work together.
- In my opinion, there has been a bit too much hype around this technology, says Brian Vad Mathiessen, professor of energy planning at Aalborg University, who believes that we are still in a demonstration phase where experience needs to be gained.
Skovgaard Energy did not want to comment on the matter.
