Nature Energy denies accusations of ulterior motives behind monetary donation

BÆNDER: Nature Energy, which is owned by Shell and operates 13 biogas plants in Denmark, donated DKK 100,000 to the Sustainable Future association in the spring of 2024. The donation coincided with the company shortly afterwards presenting plans for a new biogas plant at Vester Terp. Municipal council member Allan Svendsen (DF) questions the coincidence and calls it "highly strange" that a company outside the municipality chooses to support a local association without any immediate return. Nature Energy's Vice President of Business Development Ulrik Vestenbæk rejects the criticism. It writes JydskeVestkysten.

"The donation is given as start-up capital that the association can use to build its organization and launch initiatives in collaboration with the approximately 30 local associations that support settlement, improve living conditions and strengthen the local economy. The background for our donation is a desire to support a local dialogue on how we create space for both energy transition and local communities, but we have no influence on how the association implements its activities, writes Ulrik Vestenbæk in a written response to the media.

Foreningen Bæredygtig Fremtid is part of the so-called Tønder model, which is to support the installation of up to 125 wind turbines and 1,600 hectares of solar power plants in Tønder Municipality. The association handles financial funds from project owners who voluntarily want to support local areas. The Danish Social Appeals Board has previously criticized the Tønder model and assessed that the municipality is acting in violation of the Planning Act by encouraging project applicants to contribute to a development fund. The municipality is not allowed to receive compensation in connection with building applications, according to the assessment. It is still unknown what consequences the Danish Social Appeals Board's assessment will have for the municipality's energy investment. Nature Energy currently has two projects under development in Tønder Municipality.
