American researchers are turning their backs on the United States due to increasing political pressure and distrust of universities. Several European countries – including Switzerland – are now actively trying to attract highly qualified academics. This is reported by the Swiss newspaper Tages-Anzeiger.

American professor Timothy Quigley has chosen to leave his job at the University of Georgia to teach at the IMD Business School in Lausanne instead. The background is, among other things, the political climate in the home country and the statements and actions of Donald Trump in recent years.

- I don't want my ten-year-old daughter to grow up in an environment where it is normal for those in power to celebrate when people with a different skin color or sexual orientation live in fear, says Timothy Quigley, a professor of management who is joining IMD in Lausanne.

According to Tages-Anzeiger, Quigley is far from the only one. Several researchers are reporting hostility, research funds are being withheld, and young researchers are opting out of certain topics for fear of reprisals. The government's course is now causing European universities and governments to react. In the Netherlands and France, money has already been set aside to bring American researchers to Europe, and in Switzerland, politicians have urged the government to take advantage of the opportunity.
