EMS' investments yield returns in larger orders in the energy industry

In recent years, the engineering company has invested in improving its facilities so that it can offer services as a total supplier to the energy industry to a greater extent.

In recent years, the Esbjerg-based engineering company EMS has invested in major expansions of its facilities in Esbjerg. The investments have been made with the aim of enabling the company to bid for larger and more complex tasks in the energy industry.

Specifically, EMS has invested over 65 million DKK in its expansion, which consists of two new production halls and an administration building, which was inaugurated last summer. At the same time as the construction, EMS decided to focus 100 percent on customers in the energy industry – that is, companies that either produce, consume or move large amounts of energy, including wind, oil/gas and PtX.

- We have strengthened our skills at the 'heavy end' because we have an ambition to get more major tasks, where we are involved all the way from idea to installation. Over many years as a subcontractor, we have seen plenty of examples of how it is possible to optimize and simplify some processes if you let the producers come in at an earlier stage in the projects, says director and owner Kenneth Hagelskjær.

Strategy seems to be successful

The investment and the new strategy have so far borne fruit, says Hardy Jeremiassen, Head of Sales and Business Development at EMS.

- With our new facilities, we have gathered more competencies under our own roof, and we have gained the capacity to handle several larger projects simultaneously. This also means that our role is changing. We no longer work simply as a subcontractor, because we now have the competencies and facilities to handle all phases of an EPCI project, he says.

He highlights, among other things, an order from TotalEnergies for an advanced gas lift module for the Halfdan C platform in the North Sea, as an example of an order that has been landed as a result of the new facilities.

The module, which measures 11x2x4 meters and weighs 20 tons, will supply gas lift to nine gas wells on Halfdan C. The intention is to increase gas production and extend the well's production time. The gas lift module is currently undergoing final tests at EMS in Esbjerg.

In the gas lift project, EMS has manufactured frames, steel and pipes. The company is also responsible for assembly, coordination of subcontractors, quality control and documentation.

- Not least, the documentation is incredibly comprehensive in a project like this, because there are very high requirements for quality and safety when we work offshore, points out Hardy Jeremiassen.

The new strategy makes EMS a total supplier of engineering, production, installation and service services and has led to many new hires. Including the sister company Global Gravity, which manufactures and rents lifting equipment for the oil and gas industry, the organization has grown from 80 to 115 employees over the past year.
