BORNHOLM: The government's decision to postpone the Bornholm Energy Island is raising concerns among local stakeholders. At a meeting earlier this month, agreement was expressed that the project is crucial for Bornholm's role as a green hub in the Baltic Sea and for security of supply in both Denmark and Europe.

According to Mayor Jacob Trøst (K), Bornholm has been preparing for the project for several years, and a further postponement creates uncertainty for citizens, companies and organizations that have already invested time and resources in the project.

- Bornholm has been preparing for several years to become the center of one of Europe's most ambitious energy transition initiatives. A further postponement of Energiø Bornholm will not only delay Denmark's green transition, but also create further uncertainty for citizens and an inefficient and unsustainable situation for organizations and companies that have already invested time and significant resources in the project, says Jacob Trøst in a press release issued by Bornholm Regional Municipality on behalf of a number of local stakeholders.

Bornholm's Energy and Supply also emphasizes that clarification is necessary to ensure security of supply and future investments. The Port of Rønne sees great business opportunities in the project, but calls for a political decision that can ensure further development. All in all, the stakeholders, which also include Baltic Energy Island and Offshore Center Bornholm, declare that Bornholm is ready to contribute to the green transition, but it requires a political decision, according to the local actors.

- We are ready to seize the opportunities that Energiø Bornholm brings for an even greener energy supply. But when we soon have to make decisions about investments in, among other things, the heating and backup supply areas, we need certainty that ensures cost-effective and sustainable solutions. At the same time, we need clarification about Bornholm's future security of supply," says Director of Bornholm's Energy and Supply, Claus M. Andersen.

However, if Bornholm's readiness to take responsibility and contribute to the green transition is to be utilized, a political decision from Christiansborg is required that ensures that the ambitions for Energy Island Bornholm are maintained.

- We ask Christiansborg to recognize the seriousness of the situation. Bornholm is ready to assume its role as a green hub in the Baltic Sea, but we need certainty and a project that supports that role, says Mayor Jacob Trøst.
