The EU and the US are apparently about to start the tariff war that many hoped to avoid. On Monday evening, US President Donald Trump announced that he would impose a 25 percent tariff on steel and aluminium imports into the US. This will also hit exports from the EU. On Tuesday, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stated that there would be a countermeasure from the EU.
- I deeply regret the US decision to impose tariffs on European steel and aluminium exports. Tariffs are taxes - bad for business, worse for consumers, says von der Leyen in a written comment.
Here she does not say exactly how the EU will respond. But there will be a countermeasure, von der Leyen states.
- Unjustified tariffs on the EU will not go unanswered - they will trigger firm and proportionate countermeasures. The EU will act to protect its economic interests.
- We will protect our workers, businesses and consumers, says von der Leyen.
