A suspected Russian drone has been spotted several times over an EU research facility on the Italian lake Lago Maggiore. According to information, a drone has been sighted over the area five times in the past month. This is reported by the Swiss newspaper Tages-Anzeiger.
This concerns the EU's Joint Research Centre in the municipality of Ispra, which has been located on the lakeshore since 1960. The centre works, among other things, with research into the safety aspects of the use of drones.
The Italian news agency Ansa reports, citing legal sources, that a formal investigation is expected to be opened on Monday against unknown perpetrators. The authorities are investigating the case as a possible espionage case, and responsibility is placed with the department of the prosecutor's office that handles suspected terrorist acts.
