The German government is responding to the sharply rising energy and fuel prices with extensive relief for citizens. The plans include an energy bonus, a reduction in energy taxes for a period of three months, and help for families and people with low incomes. This is reported by Flensborg Avis.
The plans also include cheaper tickets for public transport and measures to save energy. This was announced by the government coalition between the social democratic SPD, the Greens and the liberal FDP on Thursday.
The negotiators from the three coalition parties agreed on the aid package on Thursday, after discussions had started the previous evening at 9 p.m.
- The general population must be relieved quickly, unbureaucratically and socially fairly, the agreement document states.
All employees subject to income tax will receive an energy bonus in the form of a lump sum of 300 euros, which will be paid together with their salary. In order to relieve commuters and companies, the energy tax will be reduced to the lowest level allowed by EU rules for three months. A public transport ticket will be introduced throughout Germany at a maximum price of nine euros. This particularly affects the economy of the states, which will therefore be provided with the necessary funds.
From 2024, all new heating systems must be able to operate with at least 65 percent renewable energy. According to the coalition agreement, this requirement should not apply until January 1, 2025. In addition, support will be provided to help homeowners replace heating systems if they are more than 20 years old. Finally, the government will launch a major offensive for more heat pumps. All of this should help reduce dependence on Russian gas.
