Tyra field reaches full operation and secures Danish gas supply

After several years of reconstruction, Denmark's largest gas field is back in operation and can contribute to both national and European security of supply.

Denmark's largest gas field, Tyra, is now back in full operation after an extensive reconstruction. This means that Denmark is once again self-sufficient in gas and can export excess production to Europe. TotalEnergies writes in a press release.

- It is crucial for us that Tyra has now achieved full operation. We have been working to achieve this since 2019, when we temporarily stopped production to enable the reconstruction. The production ensures Denmark a stable gas supply, while we develop a greener energy system. The Tyra gas plant is expected to deliver up to 2.8 billion cubic meters of gas per year, which is comparable to Denmark's annual gas consumption of 1.4 billion cubic meters in 2024. Therefore, the production also contributes to the security of supply of our European neighbors, says CEO of TotalEnergies EP Denmark Ole Hansen.

The Tyra field has been a central part of Denmark's gas supply since 1984, but seabed subsidence made it necessary to rebuild the facility. The project has involved thousands of employees and experts who have worked to remove, reuse and build new facilities.

- Tyra will play a crucial role in Denmark's energy landscape in the coming decades by supplying Danish gas from the North Sea with 30 percent lower CO2 emissions compared to the previous facility. The highly complex reconstruction is proof that the offshore industry in the North Sea, based in Esbjerg, is world-class. A task that would not have been possible without the thousands of skilled and dedicated employees from the many global and local companies who have spent more than 46 million man-hours getting us where we are today, says Ole Hansen.

However, the importance of oil and gas production from the North Sea to the Danish economy is not at all what it once was, as DOI.dk has previously written about.
