Large majority in Næstved moves commercial port out of town

The new port, worth DKK 365 million, must be ready by 2033 at the latest, the city council decided on Tuesday. That is, if everything goes according to plan.

NÆSTVED: The city council in Næstved decided on Tuesday evening to move forward with a plan for the relocation of Næstved Port, which will move the commercial port out of the city to Ydernæs, which is located on Karrebæk Fjord, by 2033 at the latest.

It is historic and important for the port and the companies that use the port, says Port Authority Chairman Torben Johansen (K), who hopes to "end decades of discussions about the port's properties and areas, and who should decide on these areas".

The plan is that the current port area within the swing bridge will instead be used for a new district.

The price has tripled

The relocation of the commercial port has been a hot topic in Næstved, partly because of the price. Last year, a small majority consisting of the Social Democrats, the Socialist Party, the Danish Social Democrats and the Greens voted to find a new location for the port for a price of no more than 100 million kroner, while the conservative parties, according to Sjællandske Nyheder, were furious.

Sweco was hired to make a presentation, and when their report came out in August, a new, large majority consisting of the Social Democrats and the conservative parties agreed that 365 million kroner is an acceptable price.

At the meeting on Tuesday, only the four politicians from the Socialist Party, the Socialist Party and the Greens voted against. They believed that the price for the move was far too high, and were annoyed that the Social Democrats had changed horses.

More steps ahead

Although big words were used about the historic nature of tonight's decision, there are still more steps ahead.

The port must now, in collaboration with the municipal administration, create a joint action and timetable, which must be submitted to the port board and the finance committee, and then a number of preliminary studies must be carried out, a planning basis must be prepared and regulatory approvals must be obtained, according to the agenda for the meeting.

According to Næstved Port, it is expected to take up to three years before a final and well-developed project with the necessary approvals can be presented to the city council.

According to TV2 Øst, residents of the village of Stenbæksholm have announced that they will complain about a so-called sway basin that is to be built to give ships room to turn.

In addition, it may cause problems in getting the planned port location approved, because it is located next to a Natura 2000 area in Karrebæk Fjord. Cowi and Ernst & Young have previously assessed that it may be difficult to obtain the necessary permits from the state.
