Næstved in trouble: Two locations for new commercial port dump

The city council and the port disagreed about the location. Now consultants have determined that both locations will cause problems.

NÆSTVED: The city council in Næstved would like to use part of the city's port areas for urban life, business and housing, and therefore the city council decided in 2019 to build a new commercial port outside the city. But those plans have now run into problems.

A unanimous city council has decided to locate the new commercial port at Stenbæksholm, but Næstved Port disagrees and this summer pointed to a different location for a larger commercial port at Ydernæs. The disagreement was, among other things, the port director to resign.

The municipality has had Cowi and Ernst & Young assess both projects, and their feedback is discouraging: Neither of the two proposed locations, both of which face Karrebæk Fjord, is particularly suitable.

Expensive and questionable

The analysis shows, among other things, that:

  • It will be difficult to obtain the necessary permits from the state. The Natura 2000 area and water quality requirements in Karrebæk Fjord are particularly problematic.
  • The geotechnical conditions - including the soft soil and seabed - at Ydernæs and Stenbæksholm will entail significant additional costs for both the construction and operation of a port. At Ydernæs, significant pollution from harbor sludge and an old landfill site results in additional costs.
  • The market conditions are uncertain. Not least due to the shallow navigation depth and alternative use of other harbors in the vicinity.

Therefore, the consultants conclude that there are significant risks associated with establishing a new commercial harbor at both Ydernæs and Stenbæksholm – or more generally in Karrebæk Fjord.

The analysis was discussed by the city council at a theme meeting on Monday evening, but no decision was taken on what should happen to the harbor.
