The need for support for green hydrogen continues to decline

Green hydrogen has been rated more competitive than expected, according to the results of the latest auction round. The hydrogen industry is calling on the government to seize the momentum.

Green hydrogen is much cheaper and more competitive than rumors would claim. This is emphasized by the second auction round via the EU's Hydrogen Bank, which has just concluded with support levels of between 0.20 and 0.60 euros per kilo of green hydrogen produced, writes Brintbranchen.

The 15 projects that have been awarded a total of 992 million euros will boost hydrogen and PtX development in Europe. And this is good news, assesses Brintbranchen, which calls on the government to do more to secure Danish opportunities in the next round.

- A big congratulations should be extended to the winning projects, including not least to Brintbranchen's members CIP and Norwegian Hydrogen. It is crucial that we insist on developing and scaling up green hydrogen and PtX production, both to maintain climate ambitions and strengthen security of supply and industrial development, says Tejs Laustsen Jensen, Director of the Hydrogen Industry.

- It is of course a shame that there are no Danish projects among the winners. The results of this round send a clear signal to Danish politicians that we must do much more to ensure the best possible framework for green hydrogen and PtX production in Denmark. Denmark has the potential, but it requires sufficient political framework conditions if we are to be at the forefront of the field.

In parallel with the auction in the Hydrogen Bank, there have been national PtX tenders via the 'Auction as a Service' mechanism. Here, EU member states can allocate funds for hydrogen projects themselves.

The advantage of this tender mechanism is that all state aid issues are clarified in advance, and the projects can apply for both EU and national funds. The administrative burden is thus eased for companies, who only have to apply in one place to be considered for both pools, as Spain, Austria and Lithuania have done.

Tejs Laustsen Jensen calls on the government to make use of this mechanism for Danish projects:

- The EU Commission has sent clear calls to the member states to use Auction as a Service for national tenders. We have also repeatedly called on the government to use the opportunities for continuous PtX tenders. Based on today's results, it should be even clearer that if Denmark is to continue to be a hydrogen nation, we must do more to develop the industry.
