The Social Democrats are concerned about blue nuclear populism in the transition

A false impression is given of the glories of nuclear power, believes the Social Democrats' climate spokesman, Jesper Petersen.

A kind of populist movement has emerged behind nuclear power supporters. This was stated by the Social Democrats' climate spokesman, Jesper Petersen, on Wednesday during a debate in the Folketing with blue parties such as the Liberal Alliance and the Danish Democrats.

- Recently, we have experienced what I would call nuclear populism, says Jesper Petersen.

According to the spokesman, blue parties and supporters of nuclear power give a false impression of the glories of nuclear power.

- We must be careful here. Many people in Denmark are being given the impression that they can quickly choose another path, just have a nuclear power plant built quickly, and then many of the challenges we face will be solved, says Jesper Petersen.

He adds:

- That is simply not correct.

At Christiansborg, a new perspective on nuclear power has emerged within a relatively short time. Recently, the Moderates and the Liberals both announced that they were ready to remove the ban on nuclear power from 1985.

Shortly afterwards, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) announced that she was looking at the issue with open eyes.

Before nuclear power is allowed, however, a major study must be carried out of the technology's place and possibilities in the Danish energy system.

Aagaard: Nuclear power supporters paint too nice a picture of the technology

The Social Democrats want it analyzed, and Climate Minister Lars Aagaard (M) also announced this in Wednesday's Politiken.

Here, the minister says that he believes that nuclear power supporters paint too nice a picture of the technology. Lars Aagaard emphasizes that many factors must be examined before one can talk about a possible lifting of the old ban.

- The right wing in Denmark talks about nuclear power in a vacuum, as if it is a plug and play solution, and that there are no difficult choices involved, he tells Politiken.

In the Liberal Alliance, on the other hand, they believe that the government parties are trying to shut down the debate on nuclear power with colored baiting methods. They will keep a close eye on the design of the upcoming investigation.

- It is only dawn. We are not finished. Now the work begins to ensure that the investigation will be fair, proper, transparent and "unbiased" (unbiased, ed.), says energy spokesman Steffen Frølund.
