The European Commission has proposed a six-month phasing out of Russian oil in its latest sanctions package against Russia. The sanctions come in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. According to Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin, this is causing him to consider various options. He said this on Wednesday when asked about the EU's oil sanctions.
At the same time, Peskov denies that there will be a Russian mobilization on May 9. This is when Russia celebrates its victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. Britain's Defense Secretary, Ben Wallace, has predicted that Vladimir Putin will use the celebration to mobilize further and declare full war on Ukraine.
For now, Russia is still calling its invasion of Ukraine a "special military operation". According to Peskov, the idea of a mobilization on May 9 is a far-fetched idea.
- There is no chance of that happening. That's nonsense, he says.
On Liberation Day, Putin is to speak at a military parade in Moscow's Red Square. May 9 is one of the most important national events in Russia - a day of remembrance for the enormous sacrifices the Soviet Union made in the fight against Nazi Germany.
Around 27 million Soviet citizens were killed in the years 1941-45, when large parts of the Soviet Union were destroyed. Putin says the Russians' "special operation" in Ukraine is necessary because the United States has used Ukraine to threaten the Russians. At the same time, Putin says Moscow had to intervene to save Russian speakers in Ukraine from persecution.
