The clean-up is underway after an oil spill on the Wadden Sea island of Rømø, which earlier Thursday caused the police to close off about 20 kilometers of beach from Lakolk and south along the coast. This is what the South and South Jutland Police wrote in a press release, which also states that they are investigating where the oil spill originated.
These are beads of oil with a diameter of between one and two centimeters. They lie in a patch of beach that is between 50 and 100 meters long.
Aircraft from the Danish Armed Forces have determined that there is no more oil in the sea off Rømø, but further south, the German authorities have reported similar findings of oil on the island of Sylt.
The clean-up of the beach is expected to last two days, and until it is finished, vehicles are prohibited from entering the area. Swimming is also prohibited in the areas in question.
The police are also urging any visitors to the beach to leave the oil alone. If you come into contact with it, it can be washed off your skin with soap and water.
Tønder Municipality says in a press release that the cleanup will continue throughout the night and that they hope to reopen the beach to vehicles on Friday. Since the report of oil pollution on Rømø, similar pollution has also been reported on Fanø, Mandø and at both Ballum and Højer Sluse. However, the authorities have not been able to find any pollution here after closer inspection.
