HJØRRING: Hirtshals District Heating is facing bankruptcy due to a debt of 16 million kroner after unsuccessful speculation in electricity prices during the energy crisis. This is reported by Nordjyske.

The Danish Public Utilities Agency has rejected another proposal for reconstruction, and Hjørring Municipality has already had to take over a debt of 4.8 million kroner, which it previously guaranteed.

Lawyer Henrik Poulsen, who is working on the case, emphasizes that heat for consumers is not immediately threatened, even if bankruptcy were to become a reality, because the municipality has a supply obligation. He has asked to reopen the company's accounts to find a solution, but that proposal has been rejected. November 4 is the deadline for finding a solution, and if that doesn't happen, bankruptcy cannot be avoided.

Neither the municipality nor the state has an obligation to take over the heat supply. However, the municipality has the option to do so. It is the Energy Agency's immediate assessment that the Heat Supply Act does not contain rules that provide answers to how the bankruptcy of a district heating company should be handled.

It has never happened before that a Danish district heating company has gone bankrupt, which is why it is also unknown to the Energy Agency what will happen in such a case.
