The Strait of Hormuz has been opened to all commercial ships on Friday.  Iran's Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, wrote on the social media X. Abbas Araghchi writes that the Strait of Hormuz has been declared open "in line with the ceasefire in Lebanon".

- The passage for all commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz is declared completely open for the remainder of the ceasefire, the Foreign Minister writes.

On Thursday, Israel and the Lebanese government agreed on a ceasefire that will initially last for ten days. It came into effect on Thursday evening. The US and Iran agreed on a two-week ceasefire on Tuesday last week.

It is unclear which of the two ceasefires Abbas Araghchi is referring to - and it is therefore unknown how long it will be open to shipping.

The announcement from the Iranian Foreign Minister comes after a period of one and a half months, during which shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz has been greatly reduced due to the war between Iran, the US and Israel. For much of the time since Israel and the US attacked Iran at the end of February, the strait has effectively been closed to commercial shipping.

The US continues the blockade

US President Donald Trump comments on his social media, Truth Social, the news from Abbas Araghchi.

- Iran has just announced that Iran's strait is completely open and ready for free passage. Thank you!, writes Trump.

On Monday, the United States launched a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. The blockade was aimed at all ships sailing to and from Iranian ports via the Strait of Hormuz. According to Trump, this blockade is still in effect.

Immediately after Abbas Araghchi announced that the Strait of Hormuz would be opened to all commercial shipping, the price of crude oil fell by about nine percent, writes the news agency Reuters.

The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has caused oil prices to rise, as the strait is an important transport route for oil from the Middle East. Normally, 20 percent of all the world's oil and natural gas is transported through the strait, which is located between Iran and Oman.
