Green Power Denmark: Energinet's tariff reduction is necessary and urgently needed

The business organization calls it an important step that Energinet is now lowering both the connection fee and the balancing tariff. But political action is still needed, it says.

Energinet has announced that the connection fee for renewable energy producers will be reduced by up to 10 percent, and that the balance tariff will be reduced by almost 20 percent. At the same time, the grid tariff for ordinary electricity consumers will be reduced from 13.5 øre to 11.5 øre per kWh. For households, this reduction comes on top of the government's planned reduction of the electricity tax from 72 øre to 0.8 øre per kWh for two years.

This is satisfactory for Green Power Denmark, which, however, believes that the price reductions are far from solving the problem of high connection costs. Since 2019, the costs of installing renewable energy in Denmark have increased dramatically, according to Green Power Denmark. For example, the connection fee alone has increased by 62-69 percent in just one year during that period.

- The costs have become so high that the financial basis for installing wind turbines and solar cells has disappeared in many cases. That is why we have long pressed for Energinet's prices to be examined - and ultimately reduced. Now there is a prospect that the connection fee will fall by up to 10 percent, and that the balance tariff will be reduced by almost 20 percent. This is urgently needed and absolutely necessary, says Kristian Jensen, CEO of Green Power Denmark.

The organization assesses that the price level is still a barrier to the expansion of renewable energy in Denmark. Green Power Denmark therefore proposes that the state temporarily covers parts of the connection costs via the Finance Act and in the longer term introduces a permanent state-financed model.

Kristian Jensen also warns against the green transition being slowed down by bottlenecks in the electricity grid. He therefore calls on Energinet to accelerate the expansion of the electricity transmission grid so that new solar and wind projects and large green electricity consumers do not have to wait for years to be connected.

- It cannot be emphasized enough that the green transition also requires Energinet to step up the pace and expand the transmission grid at a much higher speed than today. The installers of solar cells and wind turbines and large consumers of green electricity should not have to wait for years to be connected to the electricity grid, says Kristian Jensen.
