Delayed start-up of Tyra field results in lower oil and gas production

The Danish Energy Agency expects that less oil and gas will be produced in Denmark this year compared to the expectation in 2023. The agency writes this in a press release.

The expectation now is that 4.2 million cubic meters of oil will be produced in 2024, which corresponds to approximately 23,000 barrels. This is a write-down of 20 percent compared to the expectations in 2023.

Gas production is also now seen to be lower than previously expected. Whereas in 2023 the Danish Energy Agency expected that 2.7 billion normal cubic meters would be produced in 2024, the expectation is now 1.2 billion normal cubic meters. This corresponds to a decrease in expected production of 55 percent.

Delays with Tyra to blame for decline

The reason for the lower production is that there has been a later start-up of the Tyra field than expected. The Tyra field is an oil and gas field located in the North Sea approximately 225 kilometers west of Esbjerg.

In 2019, it was decided to take the original Tyra from 1984 out of operation because the drilling platforms had sunk so much that damage could occur in high seas.

It has since undergone a rebuild, and the new Tyra 2 facility was put into operation in the spring. However, subsequent technical problems have meant that full operation could not be initiated.

The energy company TotalEnergies is responsible for operating the field. In May, it was announced that TotalEnergies expects production to reach full capacity in the fourth quarter of this year.

Production will peak in 2030

The Danish Energy Agency has also revised up the expected gas production until 2028 by three percent compared to the latest five-year forecast.

It is expected that annual oil production will peak in 2030 with an annual production of 6.0 million cubic meters. After that, oil production is expected to gradually decline.

Gas production is expected to peak in 2025 with an annual production of 3.2 billion normal cubic meters. After that, the Danish Energy Agency expects production to remain more or less constant until 2031, from which it will gradually decline.
