EU to impose sanctions on Nord Stream and lower oil price ceiling

The European Commission will increase pressure on Russia in light of peace talks and wants a new expanded sanctions package.

The European Commission will increase pressure on Russia by imposing sanctions on gas from the Nord Stream pipelines and lowering the oil price cap, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said ahead of a meeting of the European Political Community (EPC) on Friday in the Albanian capital, Tirana.

The Commission will also add more vessels to the list of vessels that are part of the so-called Russian shadow fleet. Von der Leyen also wants to impose more sanctions on the financial sector. According to the President of the European Commission, it is time to impose new sanctions on Russia because Russian President Vladimir Putin is not taking the peace talks with Ukraine seriously.

- We want peace, and therefore we will have to increase the pressure on President Putin until he is ready for peace, she tells the press.

Ursula von der Leyen points out that Putin never agreed to the 30-day peace agreement that Ukraine proposed and that the US and the EU had backed.

The criticism comes after the Russian president chose not to personally attend the peace talks with Ukraine in Istanbul on Friday. Instead, both countries have sent delegations. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had proposed a personal meeting with his Russian counterpart in Istanbul.

- This shows President Putin's true intentions - he does not want peace, says Ursula von der Leyen.

In response, the EU Commission now wants to hit the Russian economy and Russia's largest sources of income. According to EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, EU countries' purchases of Russian gas must be a thing of the past.

- It is extremely important to take funds from Russia that the country can use to finance the war, says Kaja Kallas before the EPC meeting.

The EU Commission cannot impose the sanctions on its own, they must also be approved by EU member states.
