In the coming years, thousands of offshore wind turbines will be shipped into the North Sea, and this requires that the shipping be as efficient as possible.
At the same time, not only the offshore wind projects, but also the turbines themselves are getting bigger and bigger. Ports will play an increasingly important role in the rollout of European wind energy, because the offshore wind turbines of the future will have to be assembled on land before being shipped.
That is why the Port of Esbjerg is now building pre-assembly sites that wind turbine manufacturers and project developers can rent. The investment will ensure that the port will continue to be a major player in the offshore wind sector, where the port is currently involved in 55 projects. This is stated in a press release.
According to the port, the possibility of renting pre-assembly sites will ensure the flexibility that is crucial for the wind industry and for the transformation of Europe's energy supply.
- We believe that by establishing our own pre-assembly facility and making it available for rent to our customers, we will make the Port of Esbjerg ready for the future. It is an example of our desire to create optimal flexibility for our customers and partners, says Port Director Dennis Jul Pedersen.
Major partner has helped in the development of the project
Siemens Gamesa has been involved in the development of the upcoming setup at the Port of Esbjerg, and here we also see opportunities, but also the necessity of the upcoming improvements at the port.
- Siemens Gamesa and the Port of Esbjerg have had a professional and fruitful collaboration for many years on the pre-assembly of offshore wind turbines. We are therefore pleased that the port has involved us early in the process regarding the port's future infrastructure, so that we can provide input for the ideal setup, says Anders Midskov, Port Operations Manager for Siemens Gamesa in Esbjerg. He continues:
- This has a major positive impact on Siemens Gamesa's operations at the port. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with the Port of Esbjerg, from where we will assemble and install 1.8 GW in the next two years.
The press release does not state how much investment is needed to build the upcoming pre-assembly sites.
