"We have merged with Energi Fyn, and therefore we will take over you as a customer."
"You can save 100 DKK per month on the network tariff and subscription by switching to us. We cooperate with Energi Fyn, so you will still be a customer there."
Several Energi Fyn customers have been informed of such information over the phone by salespeople from other electricity companies. The problem is that none of these statements are true, and that customers have also had electricity agreements created without their consent in several cases. This is stated by the Funen energy company in a press release.
- We receive inquiries from customers who do not know what to do. We hear in particular that the scammers are pretending to be from Energi Fyn, and there are even some who have called and pretended to be me. In addition, customers say that the scammers present themselves as Vest Energi or Energi+ with the story that we are supposed to be their business partner, which is not the case, says Thomas Danielsen, sales manager for the private sector at Energi Fyn. He elaborates:
- The classic example is that a salesperson has called the customer without permission, and that conversation results in most cases in an unwanted order confirmation that ticks into the email box a few hours later, continues Thomas Danielsen.
The Wild West
According to Energi Fyn, the electricity market is now the Wild West, as it does not require much information to be able to create an electricity agreement in someone's name without acceptance.
It is mainly incorrect facts about prices, fees and surcharges – in other words, a promise of savings – that are used as arguments for switching away from an electricity company and getting a different electricity agreement. The Danish Consumer Council's test of electricity companies from October 2024 is also being widely used, but in a version with incorrect test results.
- The sales pitch is being turned up a lot with incorrect information. For example, I spoke to a customer who had been told that she paid for a climate surcharge that had formed during the Corona period, and that only the fraudster could remove it if she switched to his company. Another customer had been told that they could save on the grid tariff, which is not true, as this is dependent on the place of residence and not the chosen electricity company, says Thomas Danielsen, who hopes that the politicians will soon take action to protect the market from unscrupulous electricity suppliers.
Until then, the message from Energi Fyn is clear: Be extra aware of scams and end the conversation if you are called and are in doubt.
- If you get a call from someone pretending to be from Energi Fyn or a business partner, if you are asked to provide sensitive personal information, or if you are even slightly in doubt, hang up and call our customer center yourself. It is not worth it for you to continue the conversation with the scammer, because history shows that it results in an order confirmation for a new electricity contract with them, even if you say no, thanks, says the sales manager.
If you have been called and a scammer has created an electricity contract in your name against your will, Energi Fyn encourages you to call your electricity company.
