Denmark will only be self-sufficient in gas again in 2024

The delays at the Tyra field mean that Denmark will also have to import natural gas next year, according to forecasts.

Since the 1980s, Denmark has been able to cover its own needs for natural gas thanks to production in the North Sea. But last year, Denmark was a net importer of natural gas for the first time, and we will continue to be so this year and next year. This is shown by a forecast prepared by the Danish Energy Agency. It says that Denmark will not produce more gas than we need again until 2024.

The reason for the lack of balance between gas production and consumption is the reconstruction of the Tyra field, which has been ongoing since 2019. The 35-year-old production facility accounted for 90 percent of Danish gas production in the North Sea until it was closed in connection with renovation.

However, the facility needed an overhaul. This was due, among other things, to the fact that the seabed under the old facility had sunk so much that the platform had come too close to the sea surface. The 21 billion The reconstruction, which cost DKK 100 million, was supposed to be completed this year. But it has been hit by delays along the way due to the corona pandemic.

Earlier this month, Totalenergies, which is behind the renovation, announced that due to new challenges, production will not be able to reopen until the end of 2023.

In connection with Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the Liberal and Conservative parties wanted to investigate whether it was possible to reopen the Tyra field a little earlier. But this is not possible because the last and largest platform cannot be completed before then. It is currently being sailed to the North Sea, and will then be completed on site afterwards.
