This is announced by the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities.
The Bornholm Energy Island will provide green electricity to both Denmark and Germany. According to the ministry, it will be the first project in the world where an energy island functions as a central hub that both collects and distributes large amounts of electricity from offshore wind to several countries.
- With the Bornholm Energy Island, we are taking a historic step towards a more secure and competitive Europe in a time of geopolitical challenges, says Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities Lars Aagaard (M) in a press release.
- The broad political support shows that we can cooperate on and implement groundbreaking projects that ensure more green electricity for Danish and European households, contribute to lower electricity prices and strengthen energy independence in Europe, he says.
In addition to the government, the Danish Democrats, the Socialist Party, the Conservatives, the Unity List, the Radicals and the Alternative are included in the agreement.
The energy island is expected to be ready for use in 2034.
