British energy company BP has made a new oil and gas discovery at the Boomerangue prospect off the coast of Brazil. The well 1-BP-13-SPS was drilled in the Santos Basin, 404 km from Rio de Janeiro, in a water depth of 2,372 meters. It reached a total depth of 5,855 meters and encountered an approximately 500-meter-thick hydrocarbon column in a pre-salt carbonate reservoir with an area of over 300 square kilometers, BP said.

Preliminary analyses from the drilling platform show elevated levels of carbon dioxide, and laboratory analyses are now being carried out to further characterize the reservoir and fluids. Further assessment activities are planned, subject to regulatory approval. The discovery is BP’s tenth in 2025 and joins a number of discoveries in Trinidad, Egypt, the United States, Libya, Brazil, Namibia and Angola, among others.

- We are pleased to announce this significant discovery in Bumerangue, BP’s largest in 25 years. It is another success in what has been an exceptional year so far for our exploration team and underlines our ambition to strengthen our upstream business. Brazil is an important country for BP and our aim is to explore the possibility of establishing a significant and profitable production hub in the country, says Gordon Birrell, EVP, production & operations at BP.

BP owns 100% of the block, while Pré-Sal Petróleo S.A. is the contract manager. The block was secured in December 2022 during the ANP’s first round of Open Acreage for production.

BP plans to increase its global upstream production to 2.3-2.5 million barrels of oil equivalent per day by 2030, with the possibility of further increases towards 2035.
