BMW to sell petrol cars in EU after 2035

It is far too early to stop sales of petrol and diesel cars in the EU in 2035, says BMW's CEO.

BMW's top executive is calling on the EU to allow petrol and diesel cars for longer than planned. The transition from combustion engines to electric and hydrogen cars is not going so fast that it is justifiable to ban the sale of petrol and diesel cars in EU countries in just over 10 years, believes BMW boss Oliver Zipse.

EU countries and the EU Parliament have agreed to phase out petrol and diesel cars so that they will no longer be sold in the EU from 2035. This is a threat to the EU car industry, says the head of the large German car manufacturer. The deadline until 2035 is "no longer realistic", he says, according to the newspaper The Guardian, which also believes that his statements will "trigger alarm in Brussels".

- The ban could also threaten Europe's car industry at its heart, he adds.

Politicians should work to establish a framework for how progress and prosperity will come, he says. They should not block technologies that are successful.

In general, the demand for electric cars in Europe is not as high as in Denmark. Zipse believes that it is a market problem that cannot be solved with short-term public subsidies. Public subsidies for electric cars only contribute to imbalance in the market, he believes.

Where the state can intervene, in Zipse's opinion, is by establishing charging stations for electric cars and hydrogen cars. Oliver Zipse points out that large foreign markets such as the USA and China will allow petrol and diesel cars after 2035. He also points out that no EU country is close to driving only with electric cars.
