A majority of the members of the IMO, the UN's maritime organization, adopted an agreement on Friday afternoon that aims to make international shipping CO2-neutral by 2050. The Ministry of Business and Industry writes this in a press release.

The negotiations on the agreement have been difficult, and several countries are not part of it - including Russia, Saudi Arabia and the United States. According to the AFP news agency, the agreement means that from 2028 all ships must use fuel with a lower carbon content than today. If ships exceed the agreed levels, it will trigger fines. Minister of Industry and Trade Morten Bødskov (S) calls the agreement "historic".

- Although we had hoped for an even more ambitious result, this is a historic agreement, which is a first step towards climate-neutral shipping in 2050, he says in the press release.

The agreement will be finally adopted by a vote in October.

- We must have this agreement in safe harbor by October. That is why we continue the work, and we insist on taking responsibility and continuing the dialogue.

- Today we have taken a big and important step closer to climate-neutral shipping in 2050, says Morten Bødskov.

63 countries support the agreement - including the EU countries, Brazil, India, Japan and China. 16 countries are outside the agreement. These include Saudi Arabia, Russia and the United States.
