US President Donald Trump says he spoke on the phone with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who asked him to extend a tariff break until July 9th, and that he accepted. He writes this on his social media, Truth Social.

- I accepted the extension. It was my privilege to do so. The Commission President said that negotiations will begin soon. Thank you for your attention to this matter!, Trump writes.

Ursula von der Leyen wrote late Sunday evening on X that she had spoken on the phone with Trump. Here she emphasized that the EU needs an extension of the tariff break until July 9th if the union is to reach a good trade agreement with the US.

- The EU and the US share the world's most significant and close trading relationship. Europe is ready to advance negotiations quickly and resolutely. To reach a good agreement, we need time until July 9, von der Leyen said.

Changed opinion

The call took place after Trump wrote on his social media, Truth Social, on Friday that negotiations with the EU had reached a deadlock and that he recommended a 50 percent tariff on EU goods from June 1.

Subsequently, Denmark's Foreign Minister, Lars Løkke Rasmussen (M), among others, said that Denmark and the rest of the EU are ready to defend their interests in a possible trade war with the United States.

The message from Trump on Monday night is just the latest in a veritable barrage of different statements about tariffs in recent months. Since his inauguration, he has presented tariffs against almost every country in the world.

The basic tariff was presented in April. However, he also presented a much higher tariff on a number of countries and areas - including a 20 percent tariff on EU goods.

However, the much higher tariff was temporarily suspended so that the US could negotiate agreements with the countries and the EU individually. The EU tariff was thus announced at the time to be halved until July 8, until Trump announced on Friday that the plan had changed.

DI: Good news

Danish Industry believes that it is good news that von der Leyen has made Trump "come to his senses", and that it is the organization's impression that there is "progress" in the negotiations.

This is stated by Peter Bay Kirkegaard, senior chief consultant in the Confederation of Danish Industry's department for global trade and investment, in a written comment.

- From the Danish and European business community, we support the EU Commission's attempt to find a negotiated solution. However, we are also prepared to support countermeasures against American goods if the United States chooses to maintain its punitive tariffs against the EU, it says.
