Industry spent DKK 6.8 billion on environmental protection in 2024, which is 66 percent more than the DKK 4.1 billion in 2022. The increase is mainly due to large individual investments in the utilities industry, including facilities for capturing and storing CO2, as well as strengthened methods for covering energy supply. This is shown by figures from Statistics Denmark.
Excluding the utilities industry, operating expenses for environmental protection, such as wages and purchases of services, increased by 19 percent, while investments increased by 13 percent. The total increase for industry excluding the utilities industry was DKK 658 million, corresponding to 18 percent.
Environmental protection expenses reflect both rising wage and material prices as well as increased focus on environmental reporting and electrification. In the utilities sector, the increase was mainly related to large technical installations that contribute to climate protection and energy reduction.
The statistics for 2024 have been changed to include larger energy producers that were previously not included in the survey. The change in methodology has increased the total environmental protection expenditure by approximately DKK 600 million, corresponding to 22 percent of the increase, especially within air and climate protection and reduced energy and heat consumption.
