Hofor and the international energy company Elimini have entered into a strategic partnership to develop a biogenic CO2 capture and storage facility at the Amager Power Plant in Copenhagen. The partnership also includes the sale of verified CO2 credits (CDR). The facility will capture several hundred thousand tons of CO2 per year and is one of ten projects prequalified for the Danish Energy Agency's CCS support pool. This is stated by Hofor in a press release.
- This agreement is a crucial step in realizing Copenhagen's goal of becoming climate positive, says Hofor's Director of Energy, Gorm Elikofer, he continues:
- By collaborating with Elimini on CO2 capture at Amagerværket, we are creating a technical and commercial foundation that will contribute to promoting the spread of CCS technologies, which benefit both our city and the energy transition as a whole."
The project will establish a complete value chain from CO2 capture to storage and thus contribute to Copenhagen's goal of becoming climate positive in 2035. Amagerværket currently produces 9,900 TJ of heat and 670 GWh of electricity annually based on biomass and is among Denmark's largest point sources of biogenic CO2.
Elimini will be responsible for the sale of verified CO2 credits from the project.
- This ambitious partnership with Hofor is a breakthrough in scaling CO2 capture, says Ross McKenzie, Chief of Staff and Senior Vice President Corporate Affairs and Business Development for Elimini.
