Aalborg Portland has been granted a new and special status that will enable the company to establish its large CO2 capture plant more quickly. The project will capture 1.4 million tons of CO2 from cement production each year and is thus expected to be one of the largest contributions to Denmark's green transition. This is stated by the Ministry of Business and Industry in a press release.

Aalborg Portland has been recognized by Minister of Business and Industry Morten Bødskov as a "strategic net-zero project". Aalborg Portland's plant is the first in Denmark to receive this seal of approval. The status means that the project can undergo regulatory processing and permits more efficiently and at the same time gain access to advice through the EU's Net-Zero Europe Platform on financing options.

Companies that are granted the status can gain access to the Danish Business Authority's One stop shop for production plants. Here they will receive a permanent contact person, help with the necessary permits, guidance and a comprehensive process plan. The process is subject to a processing time limit of 12 or 18 months, depending on the size of the project.

- It should be easier and faster to get CO2 capture, transport and storage projects up and running in Denmark. Therefore, it is good news that the red carpet can now also be rolled out for projects that will help us achieve the climate goals. The first project has already been approved, and I hope that more will follow suit. It is green action that works, says Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities Lars Aagaard (M).

The purpose of the scheme is to support projects that can significantly contribute to the EU's and Denmark's climate goals, including the government's ambition to reduce CO2 emissions by 70 percent. in 2030.

Hope more companies will apply for special status

The government hopes that more Danish companies will follow Aalborg Portland's example and apply for recognition as a strategic net-zero project. The scheme is part of the government's initiative 'Red carpet for production companies', which is intended to make it more attractive to establish and expand production in Denmark - especially green industrial projects.

- Industry is an engine for Danish growth and is also the key to meeting our climate goals. With the special status for Aalborg Portland's green project, we ensure that CO2 capture can pick up speed. It is a step in the right direction for our climate and business, says Minister of Business and Industry Morten Bødskov.

The scheme is intended to both strengthen Denmark's green transition and create new jobs, while ensuring that Denmark remains an attractive place for green industry and production.
