Vestas closes Polish factory after lower demand

Demand for offshore wind in Europe has been lower than expected. That's why Vestas is shelving its Polish project.

Lower demand in Europe is causing Vestas to pause construction of a large factory in Poland, the company told the business media Financial Times. The factory was originally scheduled to open in 2026 and employ more than 1,000 people.

Vestas told the Financial Times that the decision to halt construction investments was due to "lower than expected demand for offshore wind in Europe". The wind turbine manufacturer would not say whether other activities had been affected by market conditions in Europe.

The factory was to produce blades for wind turbines and was to be located in Szczecin in western Poland. It would also have become Vestas' largest factory in the country.

Vestas already has another factory in Szczecin, which produces nacelles, which are the actual housing on top of the wind turbine. In September, the company also took over a factory in Goleniow, near Szczecin, which produces blades for onshore turbines.
