It was a former director of the energy company Energi Danmark who agreed to give "a small handful of key employees" a bonus scheme without a ceiling, which has run up to half a billion kroner. The agreement was made without the board of directors knowing.

This is stated by Jesper Hjulmand, CEO of Andel, one of the owners of Energi Danmark, in a written comment to Ritzau. He is also chairman of the board of directors of Energi Danmark.

- The agreement was made by the now resigned director of Energi Danmark without the knowledge of the board of directors, the director writes, among other things, without naming names.

To meet with minister

The statement comes after a number of energy groups met with Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities Lars Aagaard (M) on Wednesday. Among them was Andel.

The meeting was called because it has emerged that two senior employees in the cooperatively owned Energi Danmark have earned triple-digit million bonuses totaling 550 million. DKK. This has been described by the business media Finans.

According to the media, the bonuses have become so high because the industry has earned a lot more than expected during the energy crisis. But it has also happened because there was no cap on their bonuses.

Employees will not receive huge bonuses

Jesper Hjulmand said on Wednesday after the meeting that employees will not receive bonuses of either double- or triple-digit million amounts.

- As we have previously communicated, Energi Danmark, like the rest of the companies of this type in the industry, has bonus schemes for a selected group of employees. There is a cap/ceiling on these bonus schemes, which is our clear policy in this area, he says and continues:

- We have also previously stated that a collective bonus scheme without a cap had been entered into for a small handful of key employees.

After the meeting, the minister said that it would be irresponsible in relation to customers and owners if no cap was set on bonuses.

- I have made it clear that I expect the industry and the individual energy companies to act responsibly, be transparent and follow the rules for good corporate governance in relation to remuneration and bonuses, says Lars Aagaard in a press release.

- The representatives from the industry have informed me that they distance themselves from and will not pay out the three-digit million bonuses mentioned in the case, and that the industry's policy is that there should be a cap on bonuses that can be defended and explained by the sector.
