Electrification has really picked up speed, and that means that the grid companies Cerius-Radius and their operating company Nexel, which are responsible for operating and expanding the electricity grid in most of Eastern Denmark, are busy. It is a huge task, and therefore the companies have just completed a large tender for who will provide consultancy services for the work of future-proofing the Eastern Danish electricity grid over the next five years. The winners were Sweco and Rambøll.
Jens Fossar Madsen, CEO of Cerius-Radius, is looking forward to the start of the new collaborations.
- In the coming years, we will face a historic expansion of the electricity grid, where more cables will be laid in the ground and many new transformer stations will be built, so that we can meet the rapidly growing demand. We must succeed in this task if we are to achieve the green transition of our energy system, and I am pleased that we have found two strong partners who share our ambitions for high execution ability with a strong focus on sustainability and quality, says Jens Fossar Madsen.
Sweco and Rambøll will, among other things, provide services within project management, construction & civil engineering, electrical engineering, environment, occupational health, documentation and working drawings.
Cerius-Radius and Nexel have historically used many different consulting companies, but now the companies are focusing instead on stronger relationships with fewer partners, says Anders Vikkelsø, CEO of Nexel. He emphasizes that the agreement adds both important resources and expertise.
- In our work, we are completely dependent on good and trusted advisors. Therefore, it has been a goal for us to make long-term agreements with the consultants, which provide a good foundation for us to understand each other's workflows and processes. We believe that this is the path to the best solutions and the shortest establishment time when we have to meet the new demand. The structure of the tender is structured in such a way that we both increase our execution ability on some of our most frequent tasks and gain competencies that we do not possess today, says Anders Vikkelsø.
He adds that the tender has been decided on the basis of a balance of competencies, concrete solution proposals, collaboration and task management, price and the tenderer's staff.
- We are in the middle of a time when there is a need for this type of competencies, and at the same time we have a number of considerations that must be balanced when deciding on a tender like this. In this light, we are very pleased that we have been able to attract and make agreements with two professional players, and now we look forward to getting started for the benefit of our customers, society and the climate, is the message from Anders Vikkelsø, CEO of Nexel.
Important task awaits
In the tender, the bidders had to relate to specific projects from the Eastern Danish electricity grid, and Sweco must now solve these tasks. This means that the agreements will start quickly and increase Cerius-Radius' and Nexel's execution ability from day one.
Sweco looks forward to contributing to the electrification of Eastern Denmark.
- We are proud to contribute to the important societal task of renewing and expanding the electricity grid. With our interdisciplinary advice and expertise in electrification, we look forward to strengthening the energy infrastructure in Denmark and at the same time expanding our position as a leading advisor in the area. We look forward to the long-term collaboration with Cerius-Radius and Nexel, who share our vision of creating the foundation for the green transition, says Jes Hansen, Group CEO of Sweco Denmark.
Rambøll also emphasizes that the expansion of the electricity grid is a crucial task related to the green transition.
- In recent years, we have experienced a significant increase in the production of electricity from wind and solar to meet the rapidly growing demand from data centers, heating, industry and the transport sector. Therefore, the expansion of the electricity grid, which is the backbone of the green transition, is absolutely essential. Without a rapid expansion of the electricity grid, so that the large amounts of energy can reach consumers, large parts of Denmark risk experiencing scarcity and limitations. I am therefore pleased that we have been given the opportunity to use our local and global expertise to assist Cerius-Radius and Nexel in preparing Denmark for the increasing amounts of electricity, says John Ammentorp, Country Manager for Rambøll's energy business in Denmark.
After the five-year term of the agreements, there is a possibility of three further extensions of one year. The agreements entered into force on 17 January 2025.
