ODENSE / FAABORG-MIDTFYN: The EU's plans for a significant expansion of offshore wind are now having an impact on the Port of Odense. The port is a significant player in offshore wind, and with the prospect of even more momentum in the offshore wind industry, the port sees a need to create more space for this business segment.
Therefore, the Port of Odense has entered into an agreement with the state to purchase the closed experimental horticulture facility at Årslev in Midtfyn. Here, they will invest 4-5 billion. DKK in 'Odense Dry Port', where the area will be developed into a high-tech and sustainable logistics hub.
With Odense Dry Port, the storage and logistics part can be moved away from the current port area, but close enough to reduce dependence on international supply chains.
- I see the location in Årslev as an important piece in ensuring that we can succeed in producing the wind turbines and delivering the green quantum leaps that can give the whole world the sustainable energy it needs, says the Port of Odense's CEO, Carsten Aa, in a press release.
Odense Dry Port will be located close to the motorway and railway and is planned to accommodate up to 500,000 m2 of buildings and be equipped with the latest robot and drone technology, which Funen and Odense are already leaders in.
Political support
Odense Dry Port will be located in an area that is almost equally divided between Odense Municipality and Faaborg-Midtfyn Municipality. Both municipalities are delighted with the prospect of the new Odense Dry Port.
- A place like Odense Dry Port allows us to be an active part of unleashing the rapid development that is needed, says Mayor of Faaborg-Midtfyn Municipality Hans Stavnsager (S).
- The huge port expansion that the port planned in 2008 was completed in 2020, and is already crucial for offshore wind turbine production today. Therefore, Odense Dry Port will be a vital facility because it can strengthen the logistics for the same production at the port. This makes the supply chains robust behind the green transition, says Mayor of Odense Municipality, Peter Rahbæk Juel (S).
Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities, Dan Jørgensen (S) believes that the establishment of Odense Dry Port can be an important factor, among other things. in implementing the agreement to build 10,000 offshore wind turbines by 2050, which Denmark, the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium agreed to in May.
- The energy supply in Europe must move away from fossil fuels. That is why the government's plan is to fivefold the production of electricity from offshore wind in Denmark by 2030. But if we are to achieve the ambitious goals, we need innovative companies that can actually get the turbines out and spinning at sea. I think Odense Dry Port is a good example of this, where new and green solutions are also being considered in the actual production and logistics behind the green transition.
The Port of Odense, which is 100 percent owned by Odense Municipality, will now be in dialogue with the two municipalities to get the necessary permits in place as quickly as possible before the plans for the architecture and the technological and environmental solutions can be put into practice.
