Europe can no longer afford to be dependent on anyone. This is shown by Denmark's showdown with the US over Greenland.
This is stated by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) on her way to the informal EU summit in Belgium on Thursday.
- We can now see that trade is being used as a means of pressure, when the US, for example, disagrees with the Kingdom of Denmark about the future of Greenland, then a trade war is threatened against Europe, so we cannot be dependent on anyone, says Mette Frederiksen.
At Thursday's summit, the focus is on strengthening the EU's competitiveness.
This should help to make Europe more independent by, among other things, securing important industries within chemistry, steel and aluminium and strengthening trade agreements with other parts of the world than the US and China.
Ahead of the summit, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has advocated that Europe should "tear down the barriers" to the internal market.
The aim is to make Europe a "global giant" that can cope in competition with the USA and China.
- We should probably never have been dependent on others. We should never have been dependent on Russian oil and gas. And it is also wrong that we have made ourselves dependent on China for new technologies.
- So Europe is crazy busy, says Mette Frederiksen.
