The Danish Geodata Agency updates tools for the construction of offshore wind farms and other offshore installations

Two years after the first release of the Danish Depth Model (DDM) in 50 meter resolution, the Geodata Agency is now ready with an updated version. The depth model is a useful tool for planning work at sea – for example, the construction of wind farms, bridges and tunnels, and it can also be used when, for example, storm surge, wave and climate models are to be made.

DDM version 2.0 is still in a resolution of 50 meters, but data from completely new data sources has been integrated in the new version. This means that some of the depth data now also comes from satellites and airborne laser (so-called "Lidar") – here it is particularly the shallow areas near the coasts that have been measured with these technologies. In addition, there is a lot of data collected with Crowdsourced Bathymetry, which has contributed to better data coverage also in deeper waters. This takes advantage of the fact that data is collected from ships that are already operating on the seas, according to the Geodata Agency.

The depth model can be accessed free of charge on the Geodata Agency's website and is thus available to a wide range of stakeholders, from students to researchers, authorities and private companies who need an overview of sea areas and depths.
