According to the Speaker of the Folketing, Søren Gade (V), it is part of the political game that his interests are now being questioned. He tells TV Midtvest after the Alternative and the Unity List no longer support him as speaker.

- They are within their right to say and think what they want. Other parties also have issues, Søren Gade tells the media.

Søren Gade became Speaker of the Folketing in 2022, and once a year he has since been re-elected. All times this has happened with the support of all parties. In October, when the Folketing opens, however, contrary to tradition, a vote will have to be held on Gade's re-election due to the two parties' lack of support for him.

- We do not believe that one can carry out other tasks than representing the Folketing. It is a question of principle, and then the parties must indicate in a vote whether they still support Gade or not, said the Red Unity Party's Peder Hvelplund to Ritzau on Thursday.

Criticized for chairmanship in Esbjerg Port

Søren Gade has for a long time received criticism for his side job as paid chairman of the board of directors of Esbjerg Port. He has been criticized for the fact that the two chairman roles may cast doubt on his competence, as the Port of Esbjerg is in play to become the place where billion-dollar warships will be built.

The Danish Democrats have not yet decided whether the party will continue to support Søren Gade as Speaker of the Folketing.

Both the SF, the Danish People's Party and the Radical Left will, however, support Søren Gade's nomination, the parties inform Politiken.

With the government parties also behind them, there is therefore no prospect of a majority against Søren Gade being re-elected as Speaker of the Folketing in the coming parliamentary year.
