Energinet is investigating, together with renewable energy producers and large industrial electricity consumers, whether grid customers can take over parts of the work of connecting to the grid themselves. The aim is to shorten the process and contribute to a faster green transition. Energinet writes.
Since 2020, the number of inquiries about grid connection has increased by over 400 percent, and bottlenecks have arisen in the system. The number of construction projects has also increased by 180 percent, and many projects are delayed.
According to Energinet, this is mainly due to longer delivery times for cables and technical equipment, as well as extended case processing times at the environmental authorities. Environmental approvals and other regulatory processing take longer, partly because more projects are straining the capacity of the relevant administrations. Therefore, Energinet has initiated a collaboration with a number of grid customers in early 2025 to find new models.
-Energinet welcomes all new collaboration models if they can streamline the task of connecting new solar power plants, wind farms or large industrial electricity consumers to Energinet's part of the grid. For example, we can see some obvious opportunities to increase the speed of the green transition if grid customers can prepare the installation of the cables and high-voltage equipment that will be used to connect their plants to the grid at an earlier time than Energinet, says Søren Dupont Kristensen, Chief Operating Officer of Energinet.
At a working meeting on 3 September 2025 with the participation of grid customers Eurowind Energy, Momentum Green Energy, Wind Estate, CIP Fonden, Google, Westorix and European Energy, a number of possible tasks were discussed. They range from site preparation and obtaining environmental approvals to the actual construction of facilities, which will later be transferred to Energinet.
- At Eurowind Energy, we are ready to look at all solutions that can get our energy parks on the grid faster. We have long proposed that we can take over some of Energinet's traditional tasks. We are therefore happy to enter into the collaboration to find solutions and ultimately hopefully move some tasks to us as grid customers - to push the speed up, says Jens Rasmussen, CEO, Eurowind Energy.
Complex tasks such as procurement and construction on behalf of Energinet can be difficult to transfer due to legislation and tendering rules. But simpler tasks can potentially be outsourced faster. This will now be investigated further.
The conclusions from the work are expected in the autumn and will form the basis for a broader public debate on the future division of tasks.
