Eastern Finland is currently investigating whether wind turbines can be used as platforms for radar and sensors to detect drones, for example, close to the Russian border. The studies are part of the ResilEast program, an initiative run by municipal and regional actors in eastern Finland. The program proposes that up to 1,000 wind turbines could eventually be built in ten large wind farms along the border, with some of the turbines to be equipped with radar and sensor technology. This is reported by Energinyheter.se.
- We are testing equipment from different manufacturers and investigating what interference can occur, for example from the wind turbines' engine houses, says Petteri Laaksonen, research director at LUT, who states that several Nordic defense companies are participating in the tests.
The Finnish defense has previously been skeptical of wind turbine projects in the area due to the risk of radar interference. According to Ari Järvinen, radar expert in the ResilEast project and former employee of the defense, the preliminary results show, however, that the technology can be combined without negatively affecting military systems. He points out that high-positioned radar equipment in wind turbine towers can detect low-flying drones at a distance of up to 80 kilometers. The ResilEast project will now investigate whether the technologies can be combined and eventually become part of the EU's planned "drone defense wall" along the union's eastern border.
