The Danish IT company Edora and Eurowind Energy have entered into an agreement to establish a data center directly in an energy park with wind, solar and batteries. The goal is to demonstrate how green power and digital infrastructure can be integrated – and at the same time form the basis for a scalable model for the data centers of the future. Edora states this in a press release.
The project will serve as a proof-of-concept for a new way of running data centers directly on local, renewable energy – with minimal energy transport and optimal utilization of green power. Aalborg University is participating by developing algorithms that distribute calculations between data centers in line with current and expected energy production.
The data center will be located in a Jutland energy park that includes three wind turbines of 3.6 MW, 12 hectares of solar cells of approximately 8 MW and a battery storage of 10.8 MW / 43.2 MWh. It is directly connected to energy production, thus avoiding both energy losses and tariffs from transport over the electricity grid.
- We see great potential in rethinking data center infrastructure based on local, renewable energy production. This project gives full play to all agendas: ESG, resilience, cheap operation and is the next step towards a new standard for green digitalization, says Mads Hedegaard, CEO of Edora.
The data center will support, among other things, AI calculations, Edora Cloud and Managed IT services - but also provide space for other operators who want a more sustainable profile. The project also has a geopolitical aim and will contribute to greater digital independence in the EU.
- We must be able to do it ourselves in the EU. We must end our dependence on individual companies on the other side of the Atlantic, says Mads Hedegaard.
According to Eurowind Energy, it is about bringing energy production and consumption closer together to reduce waste and support new digital solutions.
- For us, it is about bringing energy production and consumption closer together. It reduces waste and creates new business models, where green power becomes an integrated part of digital solutions, says Jeppe Udby, CDO at Eurowind Energy.
