There are plans for a massive expansion of offshore wind in the coming years. But an obstacle to the construction of the many offshore wind turbines could be a lack of the number of specialized wind installation vessels that are needed. Especially around 2030, there is such a high demand for wind ships that it could become a stumbling block. This is reported by the research house Rystad Energy according to Børsen.
- We and the developers can see that the market will be under pressure to a certain extent in the last part of the decade. A lot of developers want to install the next generation of wind turbines (the largest wind turbines on the market, ed.), and there are still only a few ships that are actually capable of installing them. That's why it makes sense to secure yourself, says Alexander Fløtre, head of supply chain research at Rystad Energy.
As a result of the lack of wind installation vessels, several offshore wind developers have focused on securing long-term agreements with wind shipping companies far into the future. This is a trend that, among others, the shipping company Cadeler, which operates a fleet of offshore wind installation vessels, confirms to Børsen. Experts recommend an increased focus on expanding the fleet of wind ships to avoid bottlenecks.
