The US and Ukraine are in the final stages of negotiations on a minerals agreement. This is what Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Olga Stefanishyna wrote in a post on X.
- The negotiations have been very constructive with almost all important details completed, the post reads.
The Deputy Prime Minister further writes that Ukraine is striving to complete the agreement quickly in order to then sign it. US President Donald Trump has previously floated the idea of Ukraine giving rare earths and minerals to the US in exchange for American support.
According to Reuters, Ukraine rejected the first US draft of an agreement because it did not contain security guarantees for the country. According to Reuters, the draft implied that Ukraine would hand over rare earths and minerals to the US for $500 billion, equivalent to around 3555 billion. Danish kr.
Since 2022, the United States has helped Ukraine with both humanitarian aid and a large amount of weapons and ammunition. According to Ukrainian President Zelensky, the United States has provided Ukraine with weapons worth $67 billion and provided an additional $31.5 billion in direct aid. Reuters reports.
Zelensky has also said that he does not see the aid that has been provided under Joe Biden's leadership as loans.
In recent months, relations between the United States and Ukraine have been cold, and accusations have flown back and forth between the presidents of the two countries. Trump has called Zelensky a "dictator" after Zelensky accused the American president of living in a "space of disinformation" created by Russia. In turn, Trump has approached Russian President Vladimir Putin.
On Friday, he said he had had "very good conversations" with Putin and "not so good conversations" with Ukraine.
