Denmark has great ambitions for both more solar and wind energy, as well as for a generally greater electrification of Danish society, where electric cars, heat pumps and PtX systems will play a greater role.
Such a development will, however, mean significantly greater electricity consumption, and this requires a stronger electricity grid.
To push forward the development of the Danish electricity grid, Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities Lars Aagaard M) has set up a new working group under the National Energy Crisis Staff (NEKST), which will ensure that the electricity grid is prepared for the increased amounts of electricity that come with the green transition. This is stated by the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities in a press release.
- The green transition is the largest construction project of our time, and the electricity grid is a cornerstone. Without sufficient grid capacity – and co-location of electricity consumption and production – we will not achieve the great ambitions for renewable energy. NEKST must ensure faster expansion of the electricity grid and that we utilize the existing grid in the best possible way, says Lars Aagaard.
Novo Nordisk CEO to be chairperson
The NEKST working group Faster expansion of the electricity grid will have members with experience and knowledge of the issues associated with expansion of the electricity grid.
The Minister has appointed Kristina Lee, Corporate Vice President of Novo Nordisk, as chairperson for the new NEKST working group.
The Ministry emphasizes that Kristina Lee has relevant knowledge of green transition, insight into electrification aspects and solid experience with energy crisis management.
With Lee at the helm, the working group will come up with concrete recommendations and solutions that will streamline and shorten the processes for grid expansion throughout the entire process – from identifying the need to putting the connections into operation.
- Denmark must expand the electricity grid to prepare for electrification and drive green transition – on an unprecedented scale and speed. I look forward to contributing to ensuring that we create solutions across all parties with timely care, so that we can succeed together, says Kristina Lee.
In addition, the working group will look at initiatives that can relieve the load on the electricity grid and thereby increase the speed of the transition. NEKST will take the lead based on already initiated initiatives and analyses.
