50Hertz, a German grid operator, has selected NKT as the supplier of several 525 kV XLPE high-voltage cables based on direct current (HVDC) technology, covering both on- and offshore cables for the ongoing expansion of the German electricity grid. The cable manufacturer announced this in a press release.

NKT has been awarded a multi-year framework agreement containing contracts for five specific projects that support the German transition to renewable energy.

This is a historic order for NKT, as the framework agreement has a total value of approximately 3.5 billion euros. This corresponds to 26.04 billion kroner, which is the largest order in NKT's history.

- This is a historic order and a milestone for NKT, and we look forward to continuing the collaboration with 50Hertz in their ambitious expansion of the 525 kV HVDC transmission network. We look forward to further strengthening this relationship, where we are currently executing on cable projects for the two SuedOstLink transmission lines and the offshore connection to Ostwind 2. With this record order, we confirm the strength and versatility of our HVDC portfolio, our strong position in the market and that we continue to be a key supplier to the German Energiewende, says NKT's CEO, Claes Westerlind.

The contracts awarded to NKT under the framework agreement cover the five projects SuedOstLink+ (SOL+), Ostwind 4, DC32 (NordOstLink+), LanWin 6 and the German part of the project for Energiø Bornholm. In total, the contracts cover approximately 2,500 km of cable.

The projects vary from cable systems for offshore wind farms, onshore cable connections and a hybrid connection to an energy island. The projects are expected to be completed from 2029 to 2035. Additional projects may be included under the framework agreement.

With the record order, NKT can confirm an order backlog of high-voltage projects worth more than ten billion euros.
