The goal is for Middelfart Municipality to be self-sufficient in renewable energy through electricity production from solar and wind by 2030 and to significantly reduce CO2 emissions. The municipality writes this in a press release.

Climate change is becoming clearer and clearer. It is warmer in the summer with more drought. Winter is characterized by more precipitation in the form of rain, and at the same time it is more windy. In Middelfart Municipality, there has been a rainfall record in the past year, and there have also been four storm warnings with elevated water levels within the past six months. Previously, there were years between these climate-induced weather events.

On a global scale, even greater and more serious consequences of climate change are being seen. Therefore, a group of parties in the city council have entered into an agreement that sets direction and ambition for the task of producing more renewable energy in Middelfart Municipality. The goal is to make the municipality self-sufficient in electricity from solar and wind by 2030 and reduce CO2 emissions.

- We need to take responsibility for climate change and ensure that Middelfart Municipalities do what we can to shoulder our share of the burden. On the one hand, we must create significant reductions in our emissions of greenhouse gases, and at the same time we must ensure sustainable supply when, among other things, cars and heating many houses become dependent on electricity. Therefore, we must be self-sufficient while ensuring proper frameworks for the citizens who will be neighbors to solar cells and wind turbines, says Mayor Johannes Lundsfryd (S).

Behind the agreement are the Social Democrats, the Conservative People's Party's Morten Weiss-Pedersen, the Socialist People's Party and the Danish People's Party. The agreement can be viewed here

With the agreement, the parties set an ambition for the production of renewable energy in Middelfart Municipality. At the same time, it is agreed to initiate local planning for a biogas plant with CO2 capture. The plant will supply heat to the district heating network and thus contribute to supplying the eastern part of the municipality with climate-friendly heat and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

In addition, the parties agree that work will only continue on projects where the landowners are involved in the process. In this way, it is ensured that planning for unrealizable projects is not initiated.

Finally, the parties also focus on the need for a systematic and clear involvement of citizens and investors in the processing of specific projects. Proposals are being prepared for a fixed model that ensures well-planned processes around the projects.

In the coming time, the parties will enter into an agreement that determines which renewable energy plants will be included in the local planning work in order to meet the ambitions. Therefore, in the coming weeks, there will be a process where the parties will thoroughly examine the options. This work will be concluded with a specific agreement on how the ambitions above will become a reality.
