At a press conference on January 31, Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities Lars Aagaard (M) announced that the government has asked Energinet to continue work on the southern stage of the Danish Hydrogen Backbone, called "number seven", which is a hydrogen pipeline between Esbjerg, Veerst, near Egtved and the border. The target for completing the hydrogen connection was also brought forward by one year to 2030.

As part of the project, nature studies have now been initiated on a 45 km long section between Bramming near Esbjerg and Veerst, near Egtved, as new pipes are to be laid here.

As a result of these plans, owners of a total of 752 properties received an e-box letter on Monday, February 3, notifying them that biologists will now go into the field to examine animals and plants. Soil studies will also follow later. The letter also contains information about where on the route Energinet is investigating whether the hydrogen pipeline can be buried. Although the hydrogen pipeline was brought forward to 31 January, the plan has always been to carry out the environmental studies in the spring of 2025.

- The government wants a hydrogen pipeline to be ready and in operation if possible already in 2030. Therefore, we have already contacted the many landowners and neighbors who may be affected yesterday and explained that we are starting some of the many preliminary studies that are necessary for us to carry out the project. Just as important as it is that the project progresses quickly, it is equally important that we are in good dialogue with the many landowners who may end up being affected, so that we ensure that the hydrogen project is implemented as gently as possible, says Michael Linnemann Pedersen, Head of Hydrogen Development at Energinet, in a press release.

Tight schedule

The government wants the hydrogen pipe to be in operation from 2030 if possible. Even though it is a good five years in the future, it is a very tight schedule and requires many things to fall into place, emphasizes Michael Linnemann Pedersen, pointing out, among other things, that the environmental impact assessment of the project and case processing are expected to take several years.

- I have been asked several times in recent months: "How can it take five years to dig a long pipe in the ground", but the digging work itself is actually not the part that takes the most time. There are many permits and completely new regulations that need to be in place before we can even get off the ground, he says.

A market dialogue on hydrogen infrastructure from spring 2024 confirmed a large potential for the transport need for hydrogen in the Danish market of up to 6.9 GW in 2050, based on a total of 30 responses from 15 players.
